Microsoft has completed a digital transformation project at its office in Luxembourg as part of the tech giant’s first phase to improve its employees’ working environment using the Internet of Things (IoT).
UK consultancy Turner & Townsend provided project and cost management services.
The new office, which has 5m high ceilings and glass walls, has been fitted out with ‘smart’ technology using multiple sensors to monitor CO2, lighting, noise and temperature. Data is available in real-time so staff can instantly see the impact of their behaviour on the environment and therefore be encouraged to adopt sustainable habits.
Candi Carrera, Country Manager Microsoft, said: “We wanted to create the best place to work for our employees and guarantee their well-being. This is the first phase in the company’s campaign to improve its working environment through the Internet of Things (IoT). Ultimately, Microsoft wants to inspire others with this project to initiate their own digital transformations.”
The primary aim of the high-tech fit-out project was to consolidate the office for Microsoft’s Global Sales, Marketing and Operations (GSMO) and Skype businesses in its current location in Luxembourg City. Instead of occupying two floors, Microsoft has decided to enhance the space on one floor for both employees and customers.
Turner & Townsend provided project and cost management services over a 12-month period, including the procurement of the main contractor, other consultants and Microsoft direct appointments.
Turner & Townsend was appointed as part of a global framework to provide project and cost management services for Microsoft. Since 2006, the independent programme management consultancy has completed 54 projects worldwide for the tech giant.
Luke Bartolo, Country Manager Netherlands for Turner & Townsend, said: “Turner & Townsend has been working hand in glove with Microsoft for a decade now, with the key to success mainly down to proactive management, robust cost control and hands-on design management.
“For Luxembourg, this allowed our hugely experienced team to minimise changes to ensure delivery on time and under budget. The final fit-out has provided Microsoft with a unique workplace for its employees.”
